Homes destroyed in Punta Gorda by Hurricane Charley.
CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Florida (WINK) -- It was nine years ago today that Hurricane Charley hooked a right turn and directly hit Charlotte Harbor.
The Category 4 storm killed 10 people and caused $15 billion in damage.
The storm seemed to have put a bullseye on Tampa Bay, but Charley took an abrupt turn shortly before landfall and instead hit to the south on August 13, 2004.
Since then, Punta Gorda has revitalized downtown and the harbor area.
