San Juan, PR -- Tropical Storm Chantal has degenerated into a tropical wave, but forecasters warn the system could still produce heavy rains and gusty winds.

The National Hurricane Center made that determination after a reconnaissance plane went into the storm on Wednesday afternoon.

Jamaica and the Bahamas have discontinued all watches and warnings.

5 p.m. Summary:

Location: 16.5°N 73.7°W, about 230 miles ESE of Kingston, Jamaica
Maximum sustained winds: 45 mph
Present Movement: W at 23 mph
Minimum central pressure: 1012 mb, 29.88 inches

The remnants of the storm are expected to spread over Jamaica and eastern Cuba Wednesday night and into Thursday, and over the Northwestern Bahamas and over or near the Florida peninsula on Friday.

Tropical storm-force winds could still affect Haiti and eastern Cuba during the next day or so. Storm surge and localized flooding could also be a risk along southern portions of the coast of Hispaniola.
