Tropical Storm Oscar Forms In Eastern Atlantic

MIAMI, FL (CBSMiami) - Tropical Depression 15 turned in to Tropical Storm Oscar Wednesday night as it continued its northward push in the eastern Atlantic.

At 11 p.m. Thursday, the center of Oscar was about 1220 miles west-northwest of the Cape Verde Islands.

Maximum sustained winds were 40 mph with higher gusts.

The system was moving toward the north-northwest at 12 mph.  The National Hurricane Center forecast calls for the storm to turn north with a decrease in forward speed by early Thursday. On Thursday night, the storm is expected to turn northeast and speed up.

Little change in strength is forecast during the next 48 hours. By Friday, the storm is expected to dissipate.

The storm poses no threat to land at this time.
