Tropical Storm Kirk forms in the Atlantic

The National Hurricane Center has Tropical Storm Kirk centered about 1,200 miles northeast of the Northern Leeward Islands.

Miami, Florida -- As Hurricane Isaac made landfall Tuesday night in southeast Louisiana, Tropical Storm Kirk formed in the Atlantic. 

The National Hurricane Center has Tropical Storm Kirk centered about 1,200 miles northeast of the Northern Leeward Islands and is moving toward the west at about 12 miles per hour. This westward motion is expected for the next 24 hours with a west-northwesterly turn expected late Wednesday.

Minimum central pressure: 1007 MB
Maximum sustained winds: 45 mph
Direction: WNW 12 mph

NHC says some strengthening is expected but the storm does not currently any threat to land.
