Santa Clara, CA (Sports Network) - The San Jose Earthquakes made a significant signing on Friday in an effort to turn around their disappointing season as the club inked United States international defender Clarence Goodson.

The 31-year-old Goodson began his professional career in Major League Soccer with FC Dallas in 2004 and was selected by San Jose in the 2007 MLS Expansion Draft.

The Earthquakes have held Goodson's MLS rights since, despite the fact that he spent three years apiece with Norwegian side Start and Brondby of Denmark.

"We're very excited to have Clarence join us," Earthquakes interim head coach Mark Watson said. "He brings a lot of experience both in MLS and internationally. He has great leadership qualities and will be a fantastic addition to our back four."

Goodson has earned 36 caps for the U.S. and was named to the team's Gold Cup roster on Thursday.

He will join San Jose at the conclusion of the Gold Cup, which could come as late as Aug. 4 against Chivas USA if the Americans reach the final of the tournament.
