Fresno, CA (Sports Network) - Derek Carr had four touchdown passes and Josh
Quezada ran in the winning score late in the game as Fresno State took a 41-40
win over Boise State.
Carr was 39-for-60 for 460 yards, with Josh Harper catching two scores and
Quezada and Davante Adams also catching a touchdown pass for the Bulldogs
(3-0, 1-0 MWC), whose game in Colorado last week was cancelled due to the
heavy flooding in the state.
Aaron Baltazar had two scores on the ground while Joe Southwick and Jay Ajayi
also had a rushing touchdown for the Broncos (2-2, 1-1), who were coming off a
pair of wins over Air Force and Tennessee-Martin after opening the season with
a loss at Washington.
Southwick went 31-of-45 for 313 yards with an interception.
Trailing by eight points, Boise State cut into its deficit on its first
possession of the fourth quarter with a 13-play, 89-yard drive that saw
Baltazar punch the ball in from two yards out. The 2-point conversion, failed,
though and it was a 34-32 game.
A short kickoff was fumbled by Fresno State and the Broncos picked it up at
the Fresno 32. Four plays later, Southwick ran it in from a yard out and the
team converted the 2-point attempt for a 40-34 lead with 7:04 to play.
The Bulldogs, though, came right back down the field with a 13-play, 87-yard
drive which Quezada finished off with a 1-yard score for a 41-40 lead with
just 2:14 left.
The Broncos were able to get the ball across midfield, but Southwick's pass to
Kirby Moore on 4th-and-6 fell incomplete, and the Bulldogs killed off the rest
of the clock.
Fresno State got on the board on its first possession of the game as Carr hit
Quezada for a 14-yard score, but Ajayi's 1-yard touchdown run with 4:02 left
in the first tied the game.
Colin McGuire answered on the Bulldogs ensuing possession with a 20-yard field
goal, but Dan Goodale countered with a 31-yarder to make it a 10-10 game going
into the second quarter.
Carr threw a 21-yard touchdown to Josh Harper early in the second, while Grant
Hedrick answered with a 18-yard score to Troy Ware. Boise State's 2-point
attempt failed and it was a 17-16 game.
Carr tossed a 4-yard score to Harper with 2:28 to play in the first half, but
the Broncos got a 32-yard field goal from Goodale to make it a 24-19 game at
The Bulldogs opened the second half with the ball and made it a 31-19 game on
Adams' 1-yard touchdown catch from Carr, and a 28-yard field goal from McGuire
gave the team a 34-19 lead late in the third quarter.
Dallas Burroughs, though, returned the kickoff 58 yards and the following play
saw Baltazar run the ball into the end zone from 35 yards out to make it a
34-26 game heading into the final quarter.
