College Park, MD (Sports Network) - Tianna Hawkins and Alyssa Thomas each recorded a double-double as No. 9 Maryland opened its ACC slate with a 79-55 victory over Virginia on Thursday.

Hawkins finished with 20 points and 12 rebounds, while Thomas also had 20 points with 11 boards for the Terrapins (5-2, 1-0 ACC), who have won three of their last four.

Tierney Pfirman poured in 17 points in the victory.

Ataira Franklin paced the Cavaliers (5-3, 0-1) with 15 points and six rebounds. Jazmin Pitts and Sarah Imovbioh added 11 and 10 points, respectively, in Virginia's second straight setback.

Maryland took advantage of a dreadful 5-for-26 (19.2 percent) shooting performance by the Cavaliers over the opening 20 minutes to carry a 35-19 lead into the break.

Virginia, however, was able to keep the score relatively close by making 9- of-12 free throws in the first half.

The Cavaliers continued to struggle offensively in the second half as Maryland pulled away, trailing by at least 14 points and by as much as 27 in the second stanza.

Virginia ended the game shooting 25 percent (12-for-48) from the field, compared to a 40 percent (24-for-60) performance from Maryland.
