St. Louis, MO (Sports Network) - The San Diego Padres placed starting pitcher Jason Marquis on the 15-day disabled list Sunday after being diagnosed with a right elbow strain.

The move comes two days after Marquis surrendered six runs on eight hits and walked three batters over 5 1/3 innings in a loss at St. Louis. The veteran righty is 0-3 with a 5.13 earned run average over six starts since his last victory, which came June 15 against Arizona.

Marquis does lead the Padres with nine wins in 14 decisions this season, and has posted a 4.05 ERA over 20 outings.

San Diego recalled pitcher Miles Mikolas from Triple-A Tucson in a corresponding move, with the right-hander available for Sunday's series finale with the Cardinals.

Mikolas ranks third in the Pacific Coast League with 20 saves and owns a 2.91 ERA in 41 appearances with Tucson this season. He had a brief stint with the Padres earlier this month, tossing a scoreless inning of relief on July 11.

The 24-year-old pitched in 25 games out of the bullpen for San Diego in 2012, going 2-1 with a 3.62 ERA over 32 1/3 innings.
