St. Petersburg, FL-- Former Rays' starting pitcher James Shields, told Kansas City media Monday that's he's excited about the opportunity to pitch for the Royals.

In a teleconference, Shields saw many similarities in the current Royals' team, and the '07 Rays... on the brink of becoming winners.

"What the Rays did over the last couple of years, it's all about pitching and defense," Shields said.  "That's the key to success... Hopefully me and Wade (Davis) can get the job done."

Rays' manager Joe Maddon understood the decision to trade the Rays' career leader in wins, starts, and innings pitched.  But he's still going to miss both Shields and Wade Davis.

"We're losing two really good baseball players and contributors to our ascent in major league baseball over the last couple of years," said Maddon.   "Shieldsy and Wade are great teammates... Great work ethic... And very successful... I hate to see them go."
