Overland Park, KS (Sports Network) - Paul Claxton shot 7-under-par 64 on
Friday and jumped into the lead at the Midwest Classic.
Claxton began the second round at Nicklaus Golf Club at LionsGate three shots
off the pace, then recorded seven birdies to move in front at 10-under 132
through 36 holes.
Tyrone Van Aswegen, one of three overnight co-leaders, carded a 68 and dropped
into a share of second place at 9-under 133 with Franklin Corpening, who fired
Aaron Goldberg and Chesson Hadley both shot 67s to move into a tie for fourth
place. They stand alongside Jamie Lovemark (68) at 7-under.
Chris Smith, who was tied with Van Aswegen and Ben Martin after one round,
tripped to an even-par 71 and slid into a tie for seventh with 10 others at
Martin shot 73 and fell into a tie for 26th at 4-under.
Claxton, who is seeking his third Web.com Tour win and first since 2007,
opened with four straight pars before gaining momentum as the second round
The Sea Island, Ga., resident began his ascent with back-to-back birdies from
the fifth, then added another gain at the par-3 eighth to cap his outward 32.
Around the turn, Claxton birdied the 10th, then turned the trick again at the
par-4 12th. After a trio of pars, he pulled even with clubhouse leader
Corpening courtesy of a birdie at the 16th.
Claxton parred No. 17, but he was able to take the outright lead at the last,
as he birdied the par-4 18th to reach 10-under.
Corpening went out with the morning wave off the 10th tee and notched three
birdies during his outward 33.
He parred his first five holes around the turn, but reeled off two consecutive
birdies from the sixth, then parred out to hit the clubhouse with the early
Van Aswegen opened with two birdies over his first three holes, but he
couldn't maintain the pace. He closed his outward stretch with five pars and a
bogey, then parred three straight around the turn.
A pair of birdies in a three-hole stretch from the 13th had Van Aswegen one
behind Claxton, who was in the clubhouse, but the South African closed with a
hat trick of pars to remain in second place.
NOTES: Claxton's two Web.com Tour victories came at the 2001 Louisiana Open
and the 2007 Melwood Prince George's County Open ... He has made 107 career
starts on the PGA Tour without a win ... Martin's 73 broke his streak of 14
straight rounds of par or better ... He has finished inside the top three in
his last three starts.
