Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (Sports Network) - Troy Matteson fired an 8-under 63 on Thursday to grab a 1-stroke lead after the opening round of the CIMB Classic.

Matteson, a 2-time winner on the PGA Tour, had five top-20 finishes in an 8- event stretch before missing the cut in his last two tour starts.

Robert Garrigus carded a 64 and was joined in second place at The Mines Resort and Golf Club by fellow Americans Jeff Overton and Brian Harman.

Tom Gillis and Gaganjeet Bhullar share fifth place at minus-6.

World No. 2 Tiger Woods headlines a group of six players at 5-under 66. After an even-par front nine, Woods came home in 5-under 31.

Defending champion Bo Van Pelt, who won last week in Australia, managed a 1- under 70 and is tied for 30th.
