St. Petersburg, Florida -- Residents in a St. Pete neighborhood are upset Friday after they say paint chips from bridge work in the Shore Acres area are back in the water.

It's been a battle taking place for the past couple of weeks after 10 News exposed to the City that contractors they hired to paint a bridge were throwing paint chips into the water. It's a project we were told was cleaned up, but it doesn't look like that's the case.

"That's more of a fresh paint smell," says Kelly Andersen, who lives in Shore Acres community.

Andersen says he can deal with the smell, but he can't deal with the paint chips streaming along the water.

"This morning, we were out fishing and saw a cloudy haze again with workers blowing the paint. We came closer and that's when we saw paint on water. One of the covers was not in place and we saw bags full of paint hanging over bridge," says Andersen.

It's something that the City told us would be cleaned up after we first brought it to their attention weeks ago that painters they hired had painted more than just the pipes along this bridge.

"It's just carelessness. I don't think workers care about this environment. It's disheartening," says Andersen who says this shouldn't have happened.

"I'm really frustrated. I thought this was supposed to be cleaned up," he says. "That's just going to be harmful to wildlife."

Andersen says it's time for the City to clean up the contractors that they hire for the sake of the marine life who call this body of water home.

"I'd like to see the City get a responsible company come in and care about what they are doing," says Andersen.

The City did shut the painters down for the day and they are not sure now if they will let them back. For residents, they hope the City will hire more qualified painters next time.
