Sarasota, Florida -- Tire shops are used to dealing with recalls. Lanning in Sarasota remembers the Goodrich tire recall from more than a year ago.

"We did about 15 sets. If you sell the tire, then you have to do the recall," says Lanning's manager Randy Johnson.

He says most of the vehicles they've seen have been commercial vehicles belonging to electricians, plumbers and some day cares.

"It's free of charge. No cost to the customer whatsoever. We order the tires and send them back to the manufacturer for study."

In February, a church van from a New Port Richey Baptist Church on a youth trip to Georgia overturned when the tread separated from the left rear tire. Two people died and a teen was critically injured.

10 News checked to see if there were other vans still using the recalled tires. We checked more than half a dozen churches and several businesses -- none had the recalled tires.

The NTSB sends out recall notices and it's up to the person receiving the notice to act on it. Even so, the NTSB is now reviewing its own process for notifying customers of any safety problems.

Johnson says there's no excuse for not following through with a recall.

"A lack of maintenance is the only reason for not doing it. People need to stay on top of it, otherwise they're driving a 3,000-pound death machine."
