Wesley Chapel, Florida -- The Pasco Sheriff's Office says a large number of people have fallen victim to credit card skimmers found at a Wesley Chapel gas station.
Detectives say the skimmers were found on pumps 3 and 20 at the Hess gas station at 28232 SR 54 and 337 credit cards were compromised. They say they believe the cards would have been compromised either Thursday, Friday or Saturday, March 6-8.
The sheriff's office is advising people to check their credit card statements for fraudulent charges, or if they bought fuel in the past several days from that gas station.
"My wife noticed that $98 charges were being charged on our account," said a Hess customer who only wanted to be identified as Dan.
Unlike the older skimming devices, the skimmer found at the Wesley Chapel Hess gas station was placed inside the pump, which requires a key to access.
"That could be a former employee with a key or somebody who might have a key." said Det. Bruce Cohen with the Pasco Co. Sheriff's Office Economic Crimes division. That key will only work on Hess machines. They are all Gilbarco pumps so it could be that somebody from another place is just hitting the Hesses."
There is no description of the suspect being sought in this case, but there is a description of a vehicle that investigators are looking for.
"It's a 2009 '10 medium blue dodge 4 door pickup truck. It has a chrome plates rims, chrome step up bars and a chrome gas cap," Cohen said.
Detectives said this case is connection to another incident that took place in Hernando on Feb. 21.
A skimming device found inside the gas pump at the Hess on Cortez Blvd compromised 342 credit and debit card numbers.
If you have any information on who may have put the skimmers on the pumps, please call the Pasco Sheriff's Office at 727-844-7711 with information or click the TIPS tab on the sheriff's office website, www.pascosheriff.org.
