Spring Hill, Florida -- A scandal is rocking a Hernando County High School after a WXJB news report of possible grade changing.
The person at the center of the investigation is Hernando school board member John Sweeney who is being accused of altering a student's grades at Springstead High School. And that student happens to be his son.
When asked if he had any comment on the investigation, Sweeney simply shut his front door.
WXJB's News Director Sam McCall obtained the documents stating Sweeney's son received an F and a D in sophomore English. He was then allowed to take take-home tests to make up for the work, and it's the results of those two tests where the big problem comes in. The paperwork shows the student earned C's on the tests, but those scores were changed to B's.
Parents at Springstead say they're not surprised.
"It's just indicative of the way the administration is run here. Like I said it's not surprising," says parent Randy Harris.
Mark Johnson is running against Sweeney for the District One seat in November.
"The school board's function is to set policies and procedures and if he's setting a policy that he's going to violate himself then he needs to go," says Johnson.
The district did release this statement:
"At this time, we are not able to specifically comment on this situation due to an open investigation. It would be highly unethical and illegal for anyone... but a student's teacher of record to remove a grade or change a student's grade on a student's official record and or transcript."
As of now it's undetermined if legal or disciplinary action would take place.
