Steve Augello's daughter Allie was killed when a texting driver veered into her lane.
New Port Richey, Florida -- "After a half hour, I knew she should have been home."
Steve Augello is telling his story to over 1,100 Gulf High School students about how his 17-year-old daughter Allie was killed by a driver that was texting.
Augello says, "The feeling that went through my heart was like an arrow, like I lost half my heart."
Augello has given this speech to at least 15 high schools, in hopes of getting through to young people and old.
"I do this, I talk to people because if I can help one person about texting and driving and I try to help one person stop texting and driving because you don't want to be in my shoes," Augello said.
"It's really heartbreaking," says high school senior Katie Walsh. "Obviously, I want to stop now. It makes me not even want to pick it up at stop lights that scares me now."
"The other vehicle hit her on the driver's side, so the other vehicle was 100 person in her lane," Augello explains.
The roadside memorial still stands along Hudson Avenue, just a few miles away from Allie's high school. Her father says the current law is not stiff enough and he plans to go to Tallahassee to change that.
"Last year, they passed the texting bill, which is in my words, absolutely ridiculous, because it's a $30 fine and it's a secondary offense."
Augello wants to eliminate the use of cell phones while driving altogether, with a $1,000 fine for the first offense. He feels there has to be more of a deterrent to get people to stop.
"What's more important? Your life or somebody else's life, or that silly text message?" Augello shakes his head.
Augello's message today is loud and clear.
