TALLAHASSEE, Florida (Tallahassee.com) -- State-agency workers should get a 7-percent raise this year rather than the performance-based bonuses Gov. Rick Scott has proposed, representatives of AFSCME told lawmakers Monday.

Hector Ramos, regional director of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Council 79, said state workers have had to take on more and more responsibilities as the size of the state workforce has shrunk over recent years.

Ramos said state workers deserve a 1-percent raise for each of the seven years they've gone without one since 2007. He said the raise state workers got last year only helped to mitigate the 3 percent of their pay they now must contribute toward their retirement.
