Pinellas County, Florida -- A support group for the mass transit referendum "Greenlight Pinellas" assembled Friday for the first time in the Pinellas Gateway Area.
"Yes for Greenlight" is a support and fundraising organization built of business owners and civic organization leaders hoping to convince Pinellas residents to vote "yes" for a 1 cent sales tax increase that would replace existing property tax funding for Pinellas buses.
The new tax would support an increase in buses and routes as well as fund the creation of a north-south rail system connecting St. Petersburg and Clearwater.
The opposition group, "No Tax for Tracks" assembled for the first time last month. Chairperson Barb Haselden asserts that Pinellas county does not need light rail or more buses, but rather an adjustment in the existing system to make busing more efficient.
Ronnie Duncan of Duncan Properties says that "Greenlight Pinellas" is simply a different way of doing business. Part of the Greenlight stance suggests that roughly 30 percent of sales tax paid through the new referendum will come from tourists.
