Medical marijuana

Medical marijuana in Florida is one hurdle away from reality.

The proponent group United for Care collected more than the 683,000 signatures necessary to place the amendment on the November ballot, and election supervisors validated them.

Here's the signature breakdown by county in Tampa Bay: Pinellas, Hillsborough and Pasco were the top three.

Reaction on the street was mixed. 10 News got the following responses:

"It may be medical, but it will still be used recreationally, so it's not worth it."

"Oh, I believe it can be very therapeutic. I've bought into that for year and years."

"Oh, I don't agree with it. I think we've got enough problems as it is.

"I wouldn't have a problem with it if it was medical and they had a prescription."

"Yes or no? No."

"Yes or no? Yes."

"Yes or no? I'm leaning toward yes."

United For Care campaign manager Ben Pollara says collecting the number of signatures required was a triumph in itself.

"Floridians don't look at this as something controversial. If somebody is really sick and the doctor recommends marijuana as part of their treatment, they should be able to follow their doctor's recommendation," said Pollara.

Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi could challenge the language of the amendment, and the Florida Supreme Court could block it on that premise.

But Pollara says the amendment was written by an attorney and great lengths were taken to make sure it would pass legal muster.
