(CBS/AP) New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie's re-election campaign and the state's Republican Party committee have received subpoenas from federal prosecutors investigating allegations that his aides created traffic jams as political payback.

Mark Sheridan, a lawyer representing Christie for Governor and the Republican State Committee, told the Associated Press the subpoenas are for documents related to the closure of traffic lanes near the George Washington Bridge. A state legislative committee investigating the traffic jams has also issued subpoenas to the two organizations.

Sheridan says the Republican governor's campaign and the party will cooperate with investigators.

Documents already released show that Christie's aides and government allies partially closed the bridge in an apparent act of political retribution against Fort Lee's Democratic Mayor, Mark Sokolich.

Christie was quick to apologize for the incident, insisting in a lengthy press conference that he had no prior knowledge of the seemingly-deliberate plans to back up traffic. However, as investigations into the incident continue, more documents are likely to be released, making it unclear how the scandal will unfold.

Polling so far shows the scandal has taken a toll on the public's perception of the potential 2016 presidential candidate.
