Tampa, FL -- The City of Tampa is breathing life back into a dying community by injecting $1.4 million into its Sulphur Springs neighborhood.

The money will go toward cleaning up the community, the demolition of abandoned houses and building 25 brand new single family homes.

The efforts are to revitalize the community so that so that people like James Mincey and his neighbors can feel safe again.

"When I first moved out here there were a lot of problems," said Mincey. "But they've got it cleaned up and started tearing down old houses and building and making it look good."

Mincey has lived in Sulphur Springs for nearly three decades and said it feels good to see change.

"I like to see the neighborhood grow, it's growing beautifully and I like that."

Mincey's neighbor, Tom Bray, is a bit skeptic, though.

"Every time I see the City come in, they all leave out, and it's just back to being bad again," said Bray.

We took Bray's concerns to Mayor Bob Buckhorn.

"I can tell you if we did nothing it would be far worse," said Mayor Buckhorn. "I'm not going to fix the whole problem but I can change small portions of my little world and make it better for the people that live here and I intent to do that."

Mayor Buckhorn has partnered with TECO to add more than 400 street lights.

The City has also increased police presence all to make Sulphur Springs neighborhood a safer place to live.
