Plant City, FL -- There was no answer Tuesday at Chief Steven Singletary's home in Plant City, but neighbors fear the allegations leading to his sudden suspension this weekend could place a strain on his family, including his marriage to wife Courtney.

The couple have a 3-year-old son. Neighbor Pam Bacon says it's Singletary's second marriage.

"And I hate to see her facing such a horrible situation," she said.

"They made him chief and then all of a sudden this comes out. It's like a shock," said Bacon's husband Ronnie.

On camera, his neighbors describe Singletary as a hard worker. Off camera, they call him "a womanizer".

"I'm not interested in commenting on his personal life," said Greg Horwedel, Plant City Manager, "I'm only interested in uncovering what we need to do about violations of city policy or departmental policy."

Horwedel is also Singletary's boss. For now, he declined to discuss specifics, but promised they would be forthcoming.

The allegations against Singletary, said Horwedel, are such that discussing them before they could be proven or disproven might sully the Chief's reputation.

Regardless, he says, the allegations against the Chief are serious enough to warrant his immediate suspension.

He described the allegations as personal, but possibly criminal. An outside law enforcement agency might be called in to investigate if they determine it rises to that level.

Hordewel says it all stems from a recent police case. The chief's accusers, he says, are from outside and possibly inside the department.

"There may be elements of both," said Hordewel.

City officials say the investigation is expected to take another seven to 10 days. In the meantime, Hordewel wanted to assure the citizens of Plant City that the functions of the police department continue as normal.
