Lakeland, Florida -- A 16-year-old Lakeland teen was struck and killed by a vehicle Monday evening while retrieving a skateboard that rolled onto the road.
The Polk County Sheriff's Office says Devyn Rainey, a junior at George Jenkins High School, was standing on the curb at the intersection of South Florida Ave. and Schoolhouse Road when his skateboard rolled into the southbound lanes of South Florida Ave.
Rainey reportedly stepped into the roadway to get the skateboard, walking into the path of a 2005 Ford E-150.
Rainey was struck and killed instantly, authorities say. The truck's driver, 58-year-old Douglas Heruska, and several bystanders attempted to aid the teen.
The intersection will be closed until approximately 9 p.m.
The sheriff's office says it appears that charges are not pending at this time.
