St. Petersburg, Florida -- What do Addis Adaba, Ethiopia, Frankfurt, Germany and St. Petersburg, Florida all have in common? They're among the 52 Places to Go in 2014, according to The New York Times.

The global round-up showcased St. Petersburg as an example of urban reinvention, noting its "redeveloped waterfront, a stunning Dali Museum and sophisticated restaurants in place" and historic Central Avenue's "downtown energy," powered by a renaissance of the craft beer scene and funky new dining and accommodations.

"We are thrilled to be recognized by The New York Times as a top travel destination," said DT Minich, executive director of Visit St. Petersburg/Clearwater. "In addition to our award-winning beaches, we're honored to be lauded for our world-class art, dining and entertainment options."

Here's the mention in The New York Times:

"49. St. Petersburg, Fla.

Reinventing a Florida city's reputation.

Once mocked for its thousands of green benches dotted with senior citizens, St. Petersburg is anything but stationary. With a redeveloped waterfront, a stunning Dali Museum, and sophisticated restaurants in place, the downtown energy is now heading up historic Central Avenue, thanks in part to the craft beer scene. Among the many recent arrivals, artsy Cycle Brewing features Fixie and Endo ales, while Green Bench Brewing Co., the name a nod to those erstwhile icons, invites winter escapees to its sunny taproom and beer garden. Refuel at the ambitious Rococo Steak, set in a renovated 1920s YWCA, then hit the Tap Room of the reinvented Hollander Hotel.
