Still shot taken from dash cam video of what Tampa local Eric Campbell claims is an unmarked, City of Tampa vehicle being driven by firefighter Henry Williams at over 100 miles an hour.
Tampa, Florida -- An off-duty firefighter is accused of driving 102 miles per hour in a 50 mph zone.
The firefighter is Henry Williams, a seven-year Tampa Fire Department veteran. He had a disciplinary hearing on Friday that has not determined the punishment, so Williams says he can't comment... but the video alone in this case speaks volumes.
It was recorded by Eric Campbell, a self-proclaimed citizen watchdog who has a dash cam in his car. Late one night last month, Campbell saw a Crown Victoria with city plates driving at a high rate of speed on Bearss Ave. toward Nebraska Ave.
According to Campbell, "The vehicle was doing about 70 miles an hour in a 50. I got close enough to him to get his tag and at the light, he stopped."
Once the light changed, Campbell says the city vehicle got up to 70 miles an hour, and very quickly.
"I tried to pace him, but I think he knew I was following him. So he gunned it and he went well over a 100. I tried to keep up with him, but when I got a little over 100 miles an hour, I got a little concerned about my safety so I slowed back down again," explained Campbell.
Tampa Fire Chief Tom Forward said Williams, who is in his mid-20's and a driver engineer on a fire truck, displayed conduct unbecoming of a firefighter, and it was a dumb mistake.
Campbell says if he didn't have the dash cam, he believes Williams would not have been punished in the same way most people would.
"The consequences would be long-lasting and extreme for the average citizen, but to see the same guys enforcing the laws be above them, really gets my goat."
Williams, who is currently the acting public information officer for the fire department, is waiting to see what punishment the review committee will hand out.
