TRENTON, N.J. - The New Jersey Assembly made public Friday a cache of documents received as part of its subpoena for records pertaining to the controversial closing of access lanes to the George Washington Bridge.

STORY: Legal woes lurk for Gov. Chris Christie

The initial release Wednesday contained e-mails that revealed a chief aide to Gov. Chris Christie knew about the lane closings before they occurred and the massive traffic jams the action was causing.

The initial e-mails, subpoenaed from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, also showed a political motive to the lane closures.

The governor announced two firings Thursday: Bridget Anne Kelly, the deputy chief of staff whose e-mails confirmed her involvement, and campaign manager Bill Stepien, whose response to e-mails about the closings contained disparaging remarks about the mayor of Fort Lee, N.J., whose community is on the Jersey side of the George Washington Bridge.

David Wildstein, a former port authority executive who exchanged e-mails with Kelly and was central to the decision to close the lanes, was scheduled to testify before an Assembly committee Thursday, but he pleaded the Fifth Amendment, refused to answer any questions and was found in contempt.
