ORLANDO, Florida (AP) - An adjunct professor of philosophy at the University of Central Florida plans to challenge incumbent U.S. Rep. Alan Grayson in the Democratic primary this year.
Nick Ruiz said Wednesday he would run for the District 9 seat.
Ruiz previously ran unsuccessfully for the Democratic nomination for the District 7 seat in 2012.
He currently lives in New Smyrna Beach even though District 9 covers Kissimmee and south Orlando.
After redistricting, District 9 has a voting-age population that is more than 40 percent Hispanic.
Grayson has never shied from controversy as a congressman. Last year, he sent out a fundraising email comparing the Tea Party to the Ku Klux Klan.
Federal Election Commission records show Ruiz has $2,400 cash on hand.
Grayson has almost $167,000 cash on hand.
