Tampa, Florida (USA TODAY) -- A midseason rally wasn't enough to save Greg Schiano's job, and he ended up taking Mark Dominik with him.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers fired their coach and general manager Monday morning.

JOB ANALYSIS: Strong finish, key pieces in place

"The results over the past two years have not lived up to our standards and we believe the time has come to find a new direction," Buccaneers co-chairman Bryan Glazer said in a statement issued by the team.

"Mark has been a valued member of our organization for two decades and we respect the passion he showed for the Buccaneers during his time here. We thank Greg for his hard work and effort the past two seasons, but we feel these moves are necessary in order to achieve our goals."

The Bucs started 0-8 this season amidst rumors of players discontent, a public divorce from quarterback Josh Freeman and a MRSA outbreak that infected at least three players.

They won four of their next five, only to drop their final three, including Sunday's 42-17 blowout loss to the Saints in New Orleans.

Schiano, 47, came to the Bucs after 11 years as the head coach at Rutgers University and butted heads with players and opposing coaches almost from the start, infamously blitzing the victory formation of the New York Giants and Dallas Cowboys in his first two losses.

The Bucs started 6-4 last season, but it was largely downhill from there. They lost 13 of 14 games spanning the end of 2012 and the start of 2013 despite talent across the roster.

Dominik, 42, replaced Bruce Allen as the Bucs' GM in January 2009. He issued the folllowing statement in response to his dismissal Monday evening:

"I have appreciated my 19 seasons as a member of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. During that time, Tampa has become home for me and my family. We have developed great relationships with many friends and fans. I am especially proud of the strong connection that now has been built between the Tampa Bay Buccaneers organization and our military.

I have been blessed over the years here to work with some of the brightest minds of the game. All told, I have worked with seven men who have served as general managers and 10 who have been head coaches in the National Football League.  Winning SB XXXVII under the direction of head coach Jon Gruden and general manager Rich McKay was an experience I will never forget.  I believe that this team is well positioned for success in the future and I would like to express my gratitude to the Glazer family for the opportunity they provided me nearly 20 years ago to grow and succeed in the NFL."
