The latest census finds more than 46 million Americans are living in poverty.

This holiday season is bringing a wave of new families to the nation's food banks. But what they're finding goes well beyond the usual canned corn and peanut butter.

Families are now finding fresh produce.

About 20 percent of the nation's food banks are now farming produce, helping to bring families a little extra green in time for the holidays.

Despite the wintry conditions throughout most of the country, food banks are still able to grow kale, spinach, and collard greens under protective fabric.
