Sarasota, Florida -- Burglaries in a Lakewood Ranch community have people who live there wanting more security.

Even on a nice street inside of the Country Club Neighborhood of Lakewood ranch, bad things can happen.

Thomas Leavey home was broken into a few weeks ago, with more than $35,000 in jewelry and family heirlooms stolen.

PICS: Would you think burglaries could happen here?

"We found out from a neighbor who was watching are house. We got a call from them that we had been burglarized," says Leavey.

Leavey has installed a brand new security system but says that's not enough. He would like to see the neighborhood hire an armed deputy from the Manatee County Sheriffs office that would patrol the neighborhood 24/7.

Manatee County has seen tremendous growth over the past few years from North Manatee to Lakewood.

"Most of the things we respond to are burglaries," says Dave Bristow with the Manatee County Sheriff's Office.

Bristow says they reevaluate every day where deputies need to be but they can't financially put one on every street. That's why Leavey believes the community should step up so other homeowners won't be victims like he was.

"A rough estimate from the homeowner's association is that it would cost between $100-$150 per household per year to finance," says Leavey.

The homeowners associations will look at studies and discuss the issues before any final decision is made but in the meantime, the sheriff's office says there are a number of things to do to keep your home safe.

The sheriff's office recommends always turning on your alarm and locking the doors. The sheriff's office also has crime prevention officers that will come out to your home to evaluate it and let you know how you can keep it as safe as possible.
