GREENSBORO, N.C. (WFMY) -- The nativity scene displayed on the front lawn at Greensboro College is a big attraction this time of year.

Unfortunately, vandals are also interested in it. Back in 2007, vandals smashed and ripped it apart. It was created in 1936 and had to be replaced.

The school then recovered a shepherd that was stolen two years ago, but they're not taking chances it won't happen again.

"It's important not just to us, but also to a lot of people in Greensboro," said Greensboro College Director of Communications Lex Alexander.

So now, the school has resorted to around-the-clock security. "I wish it weren't necessary, but stupid people are going to do stupid things," said Alexander.

They have surveillance cameras and even a security guard. Stancil Locklear was on duty Wednesday night. "We're going to do what we've got to do to make sure nobody vandalizes the nativity scene," said Locklear.

It's a job that doesn't allow holidays off. Locklear will be here Christmas night. "I've got a 7-year-old daughter. I'm going to miss her, being home at night, her playing with her toys."

Neighborhoods across the Triad are also keeping an eye on their holiday displays. Many rely on their neighbors to help keep track of their holiday ornaments.

"We let each other know when we're going to be gone and there are retired couples in the neighborhood so there's always somebody here and there's always an eye out for everybody," said Doug Murray, of Greensboro.

A price many are forced to pay for a crime that's hard to comprehend. "It's crazy we have to be out here like this for people vandalizing something that's so pretty," said Locklear.

The security team at Greensboro College is not taking any chances this year. They'll be on alert until the nativity scene is taken down some time after the holidays. The scene they're using now was built by the college's theater department in 2008.
