Sarasota, Florida -- Operation "Holiday Street Sweep," rounded up wanted persons in Sarasota and resulted in 16 arrests and cleared 22 total warrants.

The warrant sweep conducted Thursday, December 5, focused on wanted persons north of Fruitville Road in Sarasota. The Sarasota County Sheriff's Office Fugitive Apprehension Unit, the U.S. Marshal Service Florida Regional Fugitive Task Force, the Sarasota Police Department Street Crimes Unit and personnel from Florida Probation & Parole Services were out in force.

Suspects were wanted primarily for violent weapons offenses, fraud, violating probation and failing to appear in court on felony charges. One woman turned herself in last night because of the pressure she felt from the concerted effort to find her.

"The subjects we look for are still actively committing crimes," said Fugitive Apprehension Unit Deputy Brian Barrett. "When we apprehend them, we're basically saving the citizens from being re-victimized."

"When we come out early in the morning and bring that manpower, we've already done our homework on where they could be," Barrett continued. "When you're going after wanted persons, it's not a numbers thing. Every contact helps develop information and we utilize that additional intelligence to move the case forward."
