  • Tampa, Florida -- Several hundred people gathered outside the Sam Gibbons Federal Courthouse in downtown Tampa Saturday for a two-hour long "Justice For Trayvon" rally.

Similar rallies and vigils were held in about 100 other cities around the country Saturday.

In Tampa, many in the crowd called for federal charges to be filed against George Zimmerman, the man who fatally shot Trayvon Martin last year.

Others called on state legislators to repeal Florida's Stand Your Ground law.

"Write to your government, call, send emails, get your petitions going but don't just sit dormant and let things continue to go the way they are," said Keisha Pickett, one of the event's organizers.

But not everyone in attendance was upset that last week a six-person jury found Zimmerman not guilty of murder in the death of Martin.

"Well my message is they have to respect the legal system. There was a fair trial, a jury had a verdict and they have to honor the verdict," said Kenneth Letson, of Largo.

Letson brought a sign that read "Jesus loves George," but he left the sign in his car out of respect.

"I didn't want to put something confrontational on there," he said.

Tampa's rally lasted two hours and police reported no problems. Similar rallies were held Saturday in St. Petersburg and Sarasota.
