UPDATE: Alex Cobb has been released from the hospital and is now resting at home.
St. Petersburg, Florida - Rays starting pitcher Alex Cobb was taken off the field on a stretcher after being beaned in the head by a line drive off the bat of Kansas City's Eric Hosmer in the fifth inning.
Cobb immediately put his hands to his head and collapsed to the ground after being struck. Medical staff and trainers rushed onto the field.
Rays players came to the mound and took a knee in shock while Kansas City players were on the top step of their dugout, watching as Cobb was being examined on the mound.
Cobb was kicking his legs while holding his head as medical staff attended to him. Cobb was taken off the field on a stretcher, immobilized.
One month ago, Blue Jays starting pitcher J.A. Happ was also hit by a line drive in the head off the bat of Desmond Jennings and suffered a skull fracture.
The Rays said that Cobb never lost consciousness and was hit near the ear.
Cobb is currently at Bayfront Medical Center.
