St. Petersburg, FL -- A State Department spokesperson says there was no deal or promises made to get the Hakken family returned to the U.S. from Cuba.
Patrick Ventrell said Wednesday afternoon it was just "law enforcement cooperation."
"And we're pleased it was so extensive and we were able to resolve this so quickly," he told reporters.
During an afternoon briefing, Ventrell also cautioned people not to read into whether Cuba's cooperation should be taken as a sign of improved relations between the two countries.
"I'm not sure I would read into it one way or another. I mean this was cooperation on a specific law enforcement matter."
In a brief statement released by the Cuban Foreign Ministry they indicated they were looking out for the best interest of the Hakken boys by working to return the family to the U.S.
The statement said Cuban officials were in constant communication with the State Department, "with the goal of guaranteeing the integrity and well-being of the minors."
