Tallahassee, Florida - Gov. Rick Scott is getting mixed reviews on his decision to support the expansion of Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act.

The governor says expanding Medicaid to cover an additional one million uninsured Floridians is the compassionate, common-sense step forward. It's a surprising choice for Scott, who has opposed the federal health care and its implementation from the start.

Democratic Senate Leader Chris Smith praises the governor for supporting Medicaid expansion, calling it a great choice to help Floridians.

"We've been pushing him for a year now to do this because we lead the nation in uninsured and just anything we can do to help people get insured, to help people get medical care, and it's a boost for the economy. We're paying for it and instead of paying for medical coverage for other states, I'm glad we're getting back some of the money that we sent up to Washington to use it for our own people."

Abigail MacIver of the conservative group Americans for Prosperity Florida is very disappointed with Gov. Scott because he campaigned against the federal health care law and had been a staunch opponent.

"Having him flip flop his decision like this was a real shock and a big disappointment to the conservative base that supported him winning the governor's seat."

The Legislature will have the final say on whether Florida goes ahead with the Medicaid expansion.
