New Port Richey, Florida -- New Port Richey Police have identified the man who killed Tina Lane Monday at her home and then hanged himself in her garage as 56-year-old Rex Shelton.
Investigators say Shelton was a painter by trade and worked with Lane's ex-husband, who he also lived with. Those who knew Lane and her ex told detectives Shelton was as a close family friend of the pair.
Detectives say on Monday, Shelton left Lane's ex-husband at a job site the two were at and went to Lane's home on Maplewood Drive. He then viciously attacked Lane in her bedroom sometime during the late morning, early afternoon hours.
Police say Lane suffered from traumatic upper body injuries and died in the bedroom. After killing Lane, Shelton then went to her garage and killed himself.
Investigators are trying to determine the nature of the relationship between Shelton and Lane at the time of the incident. The investigation is ongoing.
