Tampa, Florida -- As the nation mourns the loss of General Norman Schwarzkopf -- people here in the Bay area, where he retired and died -- are sharing memories of him.

Former Tampa Mayor, Dick Greco, spoke to 10 News about the general, a friend of his.

"I was sorry to hear it. By the same token, the general wasn't himself the last couple years," said Mayor Greco.

Greco said he knew the health of General Schwarzkopf was fading. According to the mayor, the two would sometimes go clay shooting together. But last time, the general just couldn't do it.

"He couldn't move around as well and he was getting a little forgetful. And you hate to see somebody that strong and that awesome be in that kind of shape. He was a great man," said Mayor Greco.

Mayor Greco described the general as a big, imposing man who looked like a general but who also had a soft side. He was a man, Greco said, that people always recognized and wanted to be around.

"He was a great man, a great general, a tremendous American and we will miss him," said Mayor Greco.
