Reggae star Buju Banton, whose real name is Mark Myrie, was convicted for conspiring to set up a cocaine deal in Florida.
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) - Jamaican reggae singer Buju Banton is waiting for a federal judge in Florida to rule on his request for a mistrial.
Banton is serving a 10-year prison sentence on two drug charges. He faces an additional five years on a related gun possession charge. His resentencing hearing was postponed to investigate a report of juror misconduct.
A juror from Banton's 2011 trial was quoted by Miami New Times as saying she did independent research into the case, in spite of the judge's orders not to. However, the juror testified in Tampa federal court Thursday that she had misunderstood the reporter's questions. She also denied doing any outside research.
The Tampa Tribune reports that the New Times reporter provided the court with a recording of his interview with the juror.
