Tampa, Florida -- A decision to charge 16-year-old Larry Brown as an adult in the murder of Critical Intervention Services security officer Michael Valentin will likely happen late next week.

Mark Cox with the State Attorney's Office says they have a process they'll follow that includes an internal hearing that will be held before deciding if Brown is charged as an adult.

Brown, who has a lengthy criminal record, remains in custody after making an appearance in juvenile court Thursday morning.

Police say the teen fatally shot Valentin Thanksgiving eve as the security officer was patrolling the Grande Oaks Apartments complex.

"He attempted to rob the CIS security officer but was not successful in that robbery and fled from the scene," Tampa Police Spokesperson Laura McElroy told reporters in Thursday.

Detectives say the gun used to kill Valentin was stolen. It was recovered, along with some clothing and other items, at an apartment close to Brown's home.

A funeral for Valentin will be held on Friday morning in New Tampa. The 38-year old was married and was a father of two young boys

His family released the following statement following Brown's arrest:

"We, the family, are extremely grateful for the diligent work of the Tampa Police Department (TPD). They were able to apprehend the individual responsible for Michael's murder and now justice will be served. We are taking this time to celebrate Michael's life. We are very proud of Michael and the service he has provided these communities."
