Bradenton, Florida -- A dog is recovering after suffering from a horrific head wound... one that investigators believe was deliberate.
The pit bull mix, which is being called "Axel," was found by Manatee County Animal Services Monday afternoon with a large gash across his head. Investigators tell The Bradenton Herald that the wound --which cut about two inches deep -- is believed to have been caused by an ax or other blunt object.

The dog underwent surgery and is now recovering at Beach Veterinary Clinic. Investigators are asking for the public's help in finding the people responsible for his injuries.
A Facebook page called Axel's Angels has been set up to help raise money to pay for Axel's care and recovery.
There have been several shocking instances of animal abuse across the Bay area in recent weeks. So far, no arrests have been made after a dog was found buried up to its neck and then shot twice in Tampa.
Also on Tuesday, authorities in Hillsborough County announced the breakup of a dog fighting ring, where the remains of possibly hundreds of animals are still being recovered.
