Bradenton, Florida -- In Manatee County alone, there are as many as 50,000 families struggling to put food on the table everyday.

While some have access to food stamps, sometimes it's not enough.

"It's people with four to five kids that need assistance," said Cindy Sloan, with the Food Bank of Manatee.

The Food Bank of Manatee provides food to about 100 agencies across the county. During the summer months when need is high donations were not just down, they were way down.

"We normally would have 250,000 pounds of food in the warehouse and at the time, we had 33,000 pounds of food, so it was way low," Sloan told 10 News.

This is where the food bank is asking the community to step in.
The Grand Challenge food collection drive is helping,
but you can too. Whether it's a financial donation or a donation of a non-perishable food item like peanut butter or cereal, it will make a difference.

"Everybody knows somebody that's having tough times and if you have a little extra, you can reach out and help and we'll make sure we'll get it to the pantries that are feeding those people," said Sloan.
