Clearwater, Fl - In a matchup touted as the battle for north Pinellas, the Countryside Cougars came out on top, holding off the East Lake Eagles 27-14.
For the eleventh time in the past twelve matchups between these two teams, it was Countryside (2-0) getting the win, and they did it in traditional Cougar fashion, on the ground.
The Cougars finished with 334 yards rushing, led by Mike Jerrido's 172 yards on 19 carries.
Midway through the third quarter, with Countryside leading 20-7, Eagles senior QB Pete DiNovo connected with George Campball on a 76-yard touchdown pass, cutting the lead to six points.
In the fourth quarter, East Lake (1-1) was driving again, but the Cougars defense held on a critical short fourth-down play.
Countryside capped off the victory with Ryan Yates scoring on a 4-yard run, giving the Cougars the 27-14 win.
Next week, Countryside hosts the Largo Packers (2-0) in another battle for Pinellas football supremacy, while East Lake travels north to take on the unbeaten Tarpon Springs Spongers.
