St. Petersburg, Florida -- A woman is in stable condition at Bayfront Medical Center after she jumped from the Sunshine Skyway Bridge and fell 174 feet into the water below.
St. Petersburg Fire and Rescue says the unidentified woman pulled over on the highest point of the bridge shortly before 7:30 Thursday morning, got out, and sat on the edge of the bridge before jumping off of it.
The Florida Highway Patrol responded and saw the jumper in the water below, trying to swim. An FHP trooper fired a flare to help guide a Fire Rescue boat to the jumper.
Seeing all of the commotion from his boat, a fisherman and his friend spotted the woman in the water and picked her up. They called 911 and the woman was taken to the hospital after being brought to shore.
"Lucky the guys in the fishing boat saw her when they did," said St. Pete Fire and Rescue Captain Tim White. "They saved her life.
