Tampa, Florida - Check Craigslist and you will find dozens of local homes for rent the week of the Republican National Convention. Some homes being advertised for a few thousand dollars, others for tens of thousands of dollars.
For example Monia Swaans is asking $18,900 for her 5-bed, 6-bath, 4,600-square-foot home on Davis Islands. She posted two online ads and has already been getting interest from potential renters.
"This is a house built in 2008, it is Mediterranean style, it is called Casa Jardine and it's a reproduction of a castle in Spain," Swaans noted.
A few miles away in Ybor City the owner of YborHouse.com has already cashed-in.
"This convention literally took us from in the red to in the black," Pat Torrence told 10 News.
Torrence says he has rented 12 homes to two different companies for the week of the convention. He won't say what he got for the homes, but he was asking for $8,000 per home and if he got close to his asking price Torrence is pocketing nearly $100,000 for the week.
"My guess is I didn't reach the ceiling, I could have done a little better but... that just becomes greed beyond what we went for."
Marvin Meeks the owner of Urban Living Tampa Bay, a real estate company says there is "definitely interest out there." Meeks says he's already rented a few homes but expects things to pick-up in the coming weeks.
"We're seeing interest in higher end (homes) as close to the convention (as possible)."
After hearing about Torrence success, Swaans is hoping she will get her home rented out too. She adds the money will come in handy.
"My daughter just got accepted to an Ivy League school and we're going to have to fork a lot of money so this will help defray the costs quite a bit."
