Lakeland, Florida-- Police responding to help a person claim personal property out of a home in Lakeland say they were forced to shoot and kill a man who answered the door armed with a gun.
The incident happened around 7:45 Thursday evening within the Lakeland Palms Mobile Home Park on New Tampa Highway.
Investigators say they ordered the man, identified as 42-year-old Robert Allen Cortez, to drop the gun. When the officers tried to approach Cortez, police say he made a threatening movement towards his gun, ignoring the officers' commands. The officers shot Cortez who died at the scene.
"The two officers reacted in the way they are trained," said Assistant Police Chief Larry Giddens of the Lakeland Police Department.
Both are placed on paid administrative leave while the incident is fully investigated.
