Sarasota, FL -- Republican turned Democrat Charlie Crist says he's not a flip-flopper, and calls the attacks against him a "real deception."

Crist says he's the same guy he's always been; he just has a different letter behind his name.

"I'm the same guy I've always been. I mean we all nuance a little bit and evolve in some ways I hope as we get older, " Crist told 10 News during a one on one interview in Sarasota on Monday.

Since announcing his candidacy for Governor, Crist has been criticized for changing his position in the past on such issues as off shore drilling, a ban on gay marriage, amnesty for illegal immigrants and the Affordable Care Act.

"I mean let's look at it," Crist went on to explain. "As Governor, I vetoed an ultrasound bill on women. As Governor I vetoed Senate Bill 6, which would have hurt teachers."

He also touched on his time spent as Attorney General.

"I mean as Attorney General I fought for civil rights."

Crist continued discussing decisions he's made during time spent in office, and said while he was a Republican at those times, his votes were more representative of a Democratic political leader.

"As Governor I fought for automatic restoration of rights. As Governor I fought to preserve the Everglades by trying to purchase a lot of it," he said. "I mean, if I had told you all of those issues, you probably would have said that had to be a Democratic Attorney General or a Democratic Governor."
