It was the costliest mayoral contest in the city's history. Combined, the two candidates raised more than $500,000.
That number doesn't include tens of thousands of dollars spent by both the Republican and Democratic state parties to try and sway the officially nonpartisan race. Foster has been endorsed by Republican Gov. Rick Scott and Kriseman has been endorsed by former Gov. Charlie Crist. Crist is running for governor as a Democrat.
Issues such as the fate of the St. Petersburg Pier and the future of the Tampa Bay Rays at Tropicana Field were seen as pivotal issues in the campaign.

Foster is the first incumbent to lose the job since residents approved a strong-mayor form of government in 1993.
Kriseman drew support from six of the city's eight council members. He will take office on January 2.
