CLEARWATER, Florida - Pinellas County Sheriff Bob Gualtieri says he is still "strongly considering" running for the late Bill's Young 13th Congressional district seat.

Congressman Young, who passed away in October, spent a career spanning seven decades in Washington politics and was instrumental in bringing funding back to Tampa Bay. He was also known as a strong supporter of the military and veterans.

In an unrelated news conference Monday, Gualtieri said he had not made a decision.

"I'm still considering it, a lot of discussion ongoing, a lot of thought," said the sheriff when asked about his potential run.

Other potential republican candidates could include former Clearwater Mayor Frank Hibbard and former County Commissioner Neil Brickfield, along with state senators Jack Latvala and Jeff Brandes.

Former Florida CFO Alex Sink is considered a front runner for the Democrats along with Jessica Ehrlich, who is also on the campaign trail.
