Tampa, Florida -- All week, protesters have been "baiting" police, trying to get officers to start a conflict. Wednesday night, the bait was downright insulting.
With makeshift fishing poles, police say protesters dangled donuts in the faces of officers, deputies, and troopers.
The officers didn't take the bait.
That led the group of around 75-100 protesters to leave Lykes Gaslight Park, where they had gathered, and wander somewhat randomly around Downtown Tampa.
Over the course of about two hours, starting at 9 p.m. Wednesday, police say the Republican National Convention protesters spent some time marching and some time sitting in intersections.
Khaki-uniformed law enforcement officers on bikes and on foot flexed and moved with the group -- working to corral them, but not confront them.
Many of the protesters came from the Occupy movement. They said they were just hoping to get their message out with signs comparing Mitt Romney to the moneybag-carrying Monopoly mascot and calling him "Mr. 1%."
"He's not a job creator, he's a job cremator," one protester said.
Eventually, that group of protesters wandered back to the camp they call "Romneyville" near Ashley Drive and Interstate 275.
Another marching band of RNC protesters stayed out even later.
After midnight, a group of perhaps 150 protesters walked down the streets of Ybor City, chanting and calling for a more open, responsive democracy.
Police also made an overwhelming showing with that peaceful but boisterous group. Our 10 News crew estimated there may have been as many as one officer for every one or two protesters.
Aside from some frustration that they were being guided along a specific route by police, the protesters in Ybor also avoided direct confrontation with officers.
Thursday, Romney will accept the Republican Party's nomination for president. Tampa Police Chief Jane Castor has said if protests and rallies are going to escalate in intensity, Thursday is the day it will happen.
